The Brilliant History of Gas Globe Signs

Dec 21, 2023

Anyone who wants their business to stand out needs to take signage and other marketing assets seriously. Bringing in customers can take a lot of work, but good signs can draw in eyes and foot traffic. One of the greatest options for signs is the classic gas globe signs that were once commonly found at gas stations. These signs aren't as common as they used to be. However, that can actually be a benefit, because these signs are now very distinctive. Keep reading to learn more about their dazzling history.

Why Gas Globe Signs Became So Popular in the First Place

Gas globe signs were once on top of the world. According to the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company, over 1,000 brands utilized gas globes in the 20th century. Remember, the world was a much smaller place back then and there simply weren't as many brands as there are today. This led to gas globes being very popular.

Many gas stations and similar roadside businesses preferred these globes. Several different factors explain what made these signs popular. The globes were distinctive, easy to see at a distance, and could still draw attention in situations where lighting was poor. Today, there are far more lights than there were in the 1900s.

In other words, when it came to signs, globes were among the most effective options. As such, they were a popular choice for companies big and small. That said, the ubiquity of these signs did decrease over time. Let's consider why.

Why Globe Signs Became Less Widespread

As the 20th century marched onward, lighting improved dramatically. This is true for both private businesses, like gas stations, and streetlights. Quite simply, the world is a much brighter place these days. Lighting technology also advanced at a rapid pace. Consequently, not only are there more lights but most of them are brighter today when compared to the past.

As lighting improved, the need for globes declined. Gas stations and other businesses found they could get many different types of signs. Some gas stations started swapping out gas globes in favor of signs that were more unique in the 1960s and onwards, according to the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company.

Perhaps a bit ironically, things may be tilting back in favor of gas globe signs. Many antique signs have become highly valuable collectibles. Further, some modern companies have started using these signs because now they're more unique and distinctive. Interested in
